Herniated Discs

There are many terms used to describe spinal disc pathology and associated pain, such as “herniated disc,” “pinched nerve,” and “bulging disc.” These terms are often used interchangeably, although there are technical differences between a herniation and a bulge.

Regardless of the label, the average disc issue and the nerve pain that accompanies it are all caused by the nuclear material in the center of the disc bulging through the cartilaginous ring that forms the outer rings of the disc. The nerves that run down the arms and legs exit the spine just behind the disc, leaving them vulnerable to the extruding material making contact, which sensitizes the nerves and causes the tingling, pulling, or burning sensation often associated with sciatica or arm pain.
